Our Hunch on Mrs. Obama's Lunch

Mrs. Obama’s ambitious campaign Let’s Move! seems to be running fairly smooth.

The First Lady’s first steps towards ending child obesity in a generation have started in the lunchroom by advocating for healthier foods, nutrition education, improved kitchen facilities and universal access. Baby steps towards tackling a massive problem, but cafeteria change is a welcomed beginning. Here’s a recap on school lunch leaps so far:

3/1/2010
Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan announced an earmarked budget of $5 million in funding for the 2010 Farmers Market Grant Program (FMPP)

2/9/2010
School Nutrition Association (SNA) has made a big commitment to support Let's Move!

10/21/2009
The White House chefs held a Healthy Kids Fair with colorful cooking demonstrations showcasing healthy, kid-friendly recipes using ingredients that are available to schools that receive federal funding for their school nutrition programs.

The First Lady’s goal of eliminating food deserts in seven years is a lofty one as 23.5 million Americans live in food deserts, and 6.5 of these are children. Hopefully institutional changes in our public school systems will be the first accomplishment leading towards systemic changes in our food system.
